Here at Mint Technology, we know that there is a ton of great free software as alternatives to pricey, store bought applications. Often this software is open-source and created by a community of developers and contributors, which leads to fast updates and rich features. You could literally run a business entirely on open-source, free software if you were so inclined. Each week in this space we will provide a review of one such piece of free software that we think is particularly noteworthy and useful– we call it the Mint Download of the Week!
We will kick things off with our first free software application that everyone should get their hands on– the Microsoft Security Essentials. This is a free anti-virus from the good folks at Microsoft that will run on XP, Vista and Windows 7. The software is lightweight, unobtrusive, and has great detection rates. It has bested our previous favorite free AV Avast and now takes the top spot for free anti-virus. So ditch your current bloated Norton or McAfee and get an anti-virus that wont bog down your system.
