Windows 7 – Should you upgrade?

Windows 7, Microsoft’s new operating system is just around the corner. October 22 it will be released to the masses. There is no doubt that this OS will be better than the flop that was Windows Vista and the aging Windows XP. But some technical hassles may keep you from switching without expert help.
First, a little background. A new operating system usually brings two choices: upgrade or do a clean install. Upgrading allows you to keep all your files and settings (hopefully) in tact while upgrading your PC with the new OS. A clean install is where you wipe your drive completely clean and then install the new operating system fresh. At Mint, we like things fresh and so usually recommend our clients do a clean install. Furthermore, if you are running Windows XP and want to upgrade, you have no choice but to do a clean install. Vista users can choose to upgrade but it is generally recommended to wipe the drive and start from scratch.
A clean installation comes with a few hassles. You have to backup all your data, programs, and settings and migrate them to the newly installed operating system. This is where we come in. Mint Technology can do all the dirty work for you so you can enjoy your new system while keeping your old photos, music, documents, programs and settings in tact.
We recommend that if you have a PC at least 2 years old and are in the market for Windows 7 to wait and buy a new one with Win 7 preloaded. If you have a relatively new machine, switching to 7 is a good way to breathe new life into it while dumping XP or Vista. Stay tuned for special Windows 7 upgrade and data migration offers as October 22nd approaches!
