Last week Google announced the Chrome Operating System, which is essentially a lightweight version of Linux designed for netbooks. Does this matter to you? Probably not.
First of all, the OS is still on the drawing board and won’t be released for months. There are already other Linux distros out there that do essentially the same thing, and are already shipping to consumers. Second, it will be designed around the Google suite of cloud-based apps and will most likely do all of its computing in the cloud. This means you will need to be using gMail for email, and the Google Docs for your office suite. This is okay for some users, but most people have certain desktop-based apps that they just can’t live without. For users on the go who are comfortable with cloud computing and already own a netbook, this may be exciting news, but they are going to have to wait a few months to see how it turns out.
